The calculation

Simple inputs. No mystery math.

Your rate covers both the money you need and the hours you cannot invoice. The calculator annualizes your monthly costs and desired income, adds 25% for taxes, and divides the total by your estimated billable hours.

Minimum hourly rate = annual need + tax allocation ÷ annual billable hours

How to use this freelance rate calculator

Enter numbers that reflect real life

  1. Enter your monthly living costs and the monthly income you want your freelance work to provide.
  2. Describe your schedule: working days, hours per day, and the percentage of time you can charge to clients.
  3. Review the minimum rate and use it as a floor when setting your actual freelance prices.

What does “schedule” mean here?

Your schedule is the amount of work time you can realistically make available during a month. A freelancer may work eight hours in a day, but only five of those hours may be paid client work. The rest may go to finding clients, proposals, administration, planning, learning, or taking time off.

That is why the calculator asks for billable time. It prevents an unrealistically low rate caused by dividing your income goal by every hour in the year.

Frequently asked questions

Freelance rate calculator FAQs

What is a minimum freelance hourly rate? +

It is the lowest amount you need to charge per billable hour to cover regular costs, reach your income goal, account for taxes, and allow for time that cannot be billed.

What does schedule mean in this calculator? +

Schedule means your realistic working time. Enter working days per month, hours per day, and the percentage of time spent on paid client work. The remaining time covers administration, marketing, proposals, planning, learning, and breaks.

Why is billable time lower than total working time? +

Freelancers rarely invoice every hour they work. Only client delivery, meetings, and other paid work are billable, so a lower billable percentage makes the estimate more realistic.

Does this calculator include taxes? +

Yes. It adds a 25% tax allocation to the annual amount. Tax rules vary by location and business structure, so use the result as a planning estimate.

Should I charge more than the result? +

Usually, yes. This is a minimum floor based on your inputs. Experience, specialist skills, urgency, complexity, market demand, and the value of the outcome can support a higher rate.
