A North Carolina pay stub is simpler than most. There are four tax lines, and each one is calculated in this calculator.
The calculator subtracts the 2026 federal standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 joint, $24,150 head of household) and applies the 2026 brackets from 10% to 37%.
Social Security is 6.2% of pay up to $184,500. Medicare is 1.45% of all pay, plus 0.9% on pay above $200,000. Your employer pays a matching share.
North Carolina uses one flat rate for everyone. For 2026 the rate is 3.99%, down from 4.25% in 2025. It applies after the state standard deduction.
The state standard deduction is $12,750 for single filers and married filing separately, $25,500 for married filing jointly, and $19,125 for head of household.
No city or county in North Carolina charges a local income tax. Where you live in the state does not change this estimate.
North Carolina does not take state disability insurance or paid family leave tax out of your pay. Unemployment tax is paid by your employer, not by you.
Employers in North Carolina use withholding tables built on a rate of 4.09% for 2026, which is slightly above the 3.99% income tax rate. The extra 0.1 point helps keep most workers from under-withholding during the year. This calculator uses the 3.99% rate, which is the tax you actually owe. If your pay stub shows a little more state tax, the difference usually comes back as a refund when you file.
This table shows an estimate for a single North Carolina worker paid every two weeks. It has no 401(k) or benefit deductions.

A traditional 401(k) lowers the pay used to figure federal and North Carolina income tax. It does not lower Social Security or Medicare tax. Health insurance and commuter benefits paid before tax lower income tax and also Social Security and Medicare tax. In this calculator, a 10% 401(k) contribution on a $75,000 salary lowers take-home pay by about $5,551 a year, not by the full $7,500, because your taxes go down too.
The minimum wage in North Carolina is $7.25 an hour, the same as the federal minimum. A full-time worker at that rate earns about $15,080 a year before tax ($7.25 × 40 hours × 52 weeks). Choose Hourly in the calculator to see the paycheck. To turn an hourly wage into a yearly salary first, use our hourly to salary calculator.
This is a quick estimate, not a payroll run. It does not include dependents, tax credits, itemized deductions, extra withholding, bonuses taxed at special withholding rates, or the federal deductions for tips, overtime, and age 65 and older. Your real paycheck may differ. Federal workers can use the federal employee paycheck calculator. Freelancers pay self-employment tax instead of payroll tax, so they should start with the freelance rate calculator. To compare North Carolina with states that have no income tax, try the Texas paycheck calculator or the Florida paycheck calculator.
