Virginia payroll taxes are simple. Your pay stub usually shows federal taxes and one state income tax line, and each one is calculated in this VA paycheck calculator.
The calculator subtracts the 2026 federal standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 joint, $24,150 head of household) and applies the 2026 brackets from 10% to 37%.
These FICA taxes are 6.2% of pay up to $184,500 for Social Security, and 1.45% of all pay for Medicare, plus 0.9% on pay above $200,000. Your employer pays a matching share.
Virginia has four brackets: 2% up to $3,000, 3% up to $5,000, 5% up to $17,000, and 5.75% above that. The brackets are the same for every filing status, so most workers pay the top rate on much of their pay.
The Virginia standard deduction is $8,750 for single filers, married filing separately, and head of household. It is $17,500 for married filing jointly. Each person also gets a $930 personal exemption.
No city or county in Virginia charges a local income tax on wages. Your state tax is the same in Richmond, Virginia Beach, Arlington, Fairfax, or a small town.
Virginia does not take state disability insurance or paid family leave tax out of your pay. Unemployment tax is paid by your employer, not by you.
Form VA-4 is the Virginia employee withholding exemption certificate. It tells your employer how many exemptions you claim and whether you want extra tax withheld. Virginia payroll withholding uses the VA-4 and the state's withholding tables, so your real pay stub can be a little higher or lower than this estimate. Any difference is settled when you file your Virginia income tax return.
Virginia has reciprocity agreements with the District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. If you live in one of those places and work in Virginia, you usually pay income tax to your home state, not to Virginia, on your wages. This calculator assumes you live and work in Virginia, so check with your employer and Virginia Tax if you commute from another state.
This table shows the estimated net pay for a single Virginia worker paid every two weeks. It has no 401(k) or benefit deductions.

A traditional 401(k) lowers the pay used to figure federal and Virginia income tax. It does not lower Social Security or Medicare tax. Health insurance and commuter benefits paid before tax lower income tax and also Social Security and Medicare tax. In this calculator, a 10% 401(k) contribution on a $75,000 salary lowers take-home pay by about $5,419 a year, not by the full $7,500, because your taxes go down too.
The Virginia minimum wage is $12.77 an hour in 2026, up from $12.41 in 2025. State law schedules further raises, to $13.75 in 2027 and $15.00 in 2028. A full-time worker at $12.77 earns about $26,562 a year before tax ($12.77 × 40 hours × 52 weeks). Choose Hourly in the calculator to see your hourly paycheck.
