How Illinois paychecks are taxed

Illinois has a flat income tax. That means everyone pays the same rate, no matter how much they earn. Most Illinois workers see three taxes on a pay stub: federal income tax, FICA, and Illinois income tax.

Illinois income tax

The rate is a flat 4.95%. Illinois has no standard deduction. Instead, each person gets a personal exemption of $2,925 in 2026. A spouse and each dependent get one too.

Federal income tax

The calculator subtracts the 2026 federal standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 joint, $24,150 head of household) and applies the 2026 brackets from 10% to 37%.

Social Security and Medicare

Social Security is 6.2% of pay up to $184,500. Medicare is 1.45% of all pay, plus 0.9% on pay above $200,000.

What Illinois does not take out of your paycheck

Illinois cities and counties, including Chicago, do not charge a local income tax on wages. Illinois also has no state disability insurance tax and no employee-paid unemployment tax. Employers pay unemployment tax themselves.

How the Illinois exemption works

Your Illinois tax is 4.95% of your pay after pre-tax deductions and your exemptions. A single worker gets one $2,925 exemption. A married couple filing jointly gets two. Each dependent adds one more. The exemption is removed when federal income is above $250,000 (single) or $500,000 (joint).

Illinois pay for 12-hour shifts and overtime

Illinois follows a weekly overtime rule. Hours over 40 in one workweek are paid at 1.5 times your regular rate. Illinois does not require overtime after 8 or 12 hours in a single day. This matters for shift workers such as nurses, factory workers, and security staff.

ScheduleHours per weekOvertime hoursGross pay per week at $25 an hour
5 × 8-hour shifts400$1,000.00
4 × 10-hour shifts400$1,000.00
3 × 12-hour shifts360$900.00
4 × 12-hour shifts488$1,300.00
5 × 12-hour shifts6020$1,750.00

Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the hourly wage, which is $37.50 an hour in this example.

For example, a worker who earns $30 an hour and works four 12-hour shifts a week gets $1,560 gross pay each week. That is $1,200 for 40 regular hours plus $360 for 8 overtime hours. Over a year that is $81,120 gross, or about $62,027 take-home for a single worker with no other deductions. Tap "4 × 12-hour shifts" in the calculator to try it. Illinois minimum wage and hourly pay

The Illinois minimum wage is $15.00 an hour for most adult workers. Chicago and Cook County have their own higher local minimums, so check the current rate where you work. A full-time worker at $15.00 an hour earns about $31,200 a year before tax ($15 × 40 hours × 52 weeks). To turn an hourly wage into a yearly salary first, use our hourly to salary calculator.

What this calculator does not include

This is a quick estimate, not a payroll run. It does not include federal child tax credits, itemized deductions, bonuses taxed at special withholding rates, night or weekend pay bonuses, or the extra $1,000 Illinois exemption for age 65 or blindness. If you are self-employed, you pay self-employment tax instead of payroll tax, so start with the freelance rate calculator. Federal workers can use the federal employee paycheck calculator. To see how other states compare, try the California, Texas, and Florida paycheck calculators.
